Innovation and the Future of the Northern Economy

SURF has been invited to contribute to a strategic assessment of the positioning of the regions of the North of England to address the long-term economic opportunities and challenges they face. The work is being coordinated through the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS) and the Spatial Economics Research Centre (SERC) to bring together leading academics and policy thinkers in the field of urban and regional development. The project is envisaged as a year long process to assemble existing research evidence into an integrated group of papers which can assess both key external ‘turning points’ and indigenous capacity; arranged around drivers of regional development, contexts and legacies. SURF will be contributing a paper on the role of innovation in the development of the Northern economy in light of external pressures and will contribute to a symposium on ‘Economic Development in the North of England Post-Recession’ in March 2010.
